How to back up firefox configuration settings | prefs.js

Before you make any changes on your firefox configuration settings, it is always a good practice to make a backup of your settings before you proceed. This way, if something wrong happens, you can always revert back to the previous state.

*Take note that this is different from simply backing up your "bookmarks" in firefox.

STEPS:

1.) First is you need to show hidden files and folders in your machine

  • Go to START/ORB (XP/Vista/7)
  • Control Panel
  • Appearance Personalization
  • Folder Options
  • View
And select the "Show hidden Files,Folder and Drives"
  • Click Apply and OK.

Now your hidden files and folder will be visible.

2.) Next, open windows explorer and go to C:\

For Windows XP
\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile ID>.default\

For Vista / Windows 7
\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile ID>.default\

Find the file named prefs.js and copy it to a safe location.

This file contains your configuration settings in firefox so if for some reason you had problems after configuring your settings, simply copy and replace the prefs.js file in your firefox folder with this backup copy.

*To Hide back the folders, simply follow step 1 and select "Don't show hidden files, folders and Drive"

Thats it! Good luck and have fun tweaking!
